When institutions lack accountability or independence, policymaking becomes inconsistent or politically motivated, deterring both domestic and international investment. The contrast between development trajectories in various regions often reflects differences in institutional quality and governance approaches.

Political stability creates the predictable environment necessary for long-term investment and planning. When businesses and individuals can reasonably predict future political conditions, they’re more willing to make investments that pay off over time. Research shows that heightened levels of political stability substantially foster financial development and create a climate of confidence for economic agents to engage actively in markets.

Compare the development trajectories of South Korea and North Korea since the 1950s. Foreign direct investment has been a pillar of development strategies, bringing not just capital but also technology transfer, management expertise, and access to international markets. However, the impact varies significantly based on how countries manage these relationships and integrate them with domestic development priorities.

The China and India comparison

China and India provide fascinating case studies in how global integration influences development. Starting from similar positions in the late 1970s, these giants took different paths. China’s approach to attracting FDI was more aggressive and export-oriented, while India maintained a more closed economy focused on domestic growth.

China’s increasing openness to trade and FDI transformed it into the world’s manufacturing hub. The country became the largest FDI recipient among developing nations, with foreign trade as a share of GDP rising dramatically. China’s membership in the World Trade Organization further accelerated this integration, providing access to global markets and technology.

India, conversely, experienced rapid growth primarily through domestic production and services sector expansion rather than export-led manufacturing. While China’s trade sector peaked at 60 percent of GDP, India’s remained lower at around 43 percent. This reflects India’s historically inward-looking policy priorities, though recent reforms have increased its global integration, particularly in information technology services.

The contrasting experiences demonstrate that while global integration offers tremendous opportunities, the specific approach matters enormously. China leveraged FDI and export-oriented policies to achieve rapid industrialization, while India’s growth model relied more heavily on domestic consumption and service sector development.

The interconnected nature of development

Understanding individual development factors is important, but recognizing how they interact proves crucial. Economic and non-economic factors don’t operate independently-they reinforce or undermine each other in complex ways.

For example, technological advancement requires not just scientific capability but also social attitudes that embrace change and institutional frameworks that protect intellectual property. Similarly, capital formation depends on both savings behavior, influenced by cultural attitudes, and financial institutions shaped by governance quality.

Successful development typically requires achieving positive synergies among multiple factors rather than excelling in just one area. Singapore exemplifies this interconnected approach-despite lacking natural resources and having a small population, it focused intensively on education, political stability, and institutional development while creating a business-friendly environment with strong rule of law.

The development process also exhibits cumulative causation: success in one area creates conditions for success in others. Good governance attracts investment, which creates jobs and income, which supports education and healthcare improvements, which enhance human capital, which attracts more sophisticated investments.
