Imagine a world where something as simple as turning on a tap could unlock economic growth, improve health outcomes, and save millions of lives. That’s not a distant dream-it’s the reality of what water and sanitation can achieve when made accessible to everyone. These fundamental necessities are more than just basic services; they are powerful catalysts that drive development and help nations achieve their most ambitious goals.

The central role of water and sanitation in global development

When world leaders gathered in 2000 to sign the United Nations Millennium Declaration, they committed to an ambitious agenda: reducing extreme poverty, improving health, and creating opportunities for billions of people. Among the eight Millennium Development Goals that emerged from this commitment, one target specifically addressed water and sanitation-Target 7C aimed to halve the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation by 2015.

But here’s what makes this target particularly significant: water and sanitation don’t just support one isolated goal. They weave through nearly every aspect of human development. Think about it-when a child has access to clean water, they’re less likely to fall sick, which means they attend school more regularly. When women don’t have to spend hours fetching water, they can pursue education or income-generating activities. When communities have proper sanitation, disease transmission drops, healthcare costs decrease, and productivity rises.

Research shows that diarrhoeal disease alone is responsible for 1.5 million deaths annually, including 360,000 children under five, with 58% of these cases attributed to unsafe water supply, sanitation and hygiene. The ripple effects touch poverty reduction, gender equality, child mortality, maternal health, and environmental sustainability-essentially forming the foundation upon which other development goals can be built.

How improved water access transforms economies

The economic case for investing in water and sanitation is remarkably compelling. Every hour spent walking to distant water sources or waiting in long lines at community kiosks is an hour not spent earning income, studying, or building a business. For millions of families, particularly women who bear the primary responsibility for water collection, this represents a massive drain on economic potential.

Time savings translate to economic opportunity

Consider the numbers: an estimated $260 billion is lost globally each year due to lack of basic water and sanitation. When households gain access to water at home, that time transforms into opportunity. Women can start small businesses, tend to crops more efficiently, or pursue education. Children attend school more consistently. The cumulative effect is profound-communities begin to break cycles of poverty that have persisted for generations.

Take the example of communities that have installed water systems near homes. Suddenly, women who once carried water on their backs for hours can run market stalls, men who used motorcycles for water transport can use them for income-generating delivery services, and businesses that require clean water-like food vendors or small manufacturers-can establish themselves and thrive.

Reducing healthcare costs and boosting productivity

The health benefits of clean water access directly translate into economic gains. When families aren’t constantly battling waterborne illnesses, they spend less on medical care and miss fewer workdays. Every $1 invested in water and sanitation provides a $4 economic return from lower health costs, more productivity, and fewer premature deaths.

This return on investment isn’t theoretical-it shows up in household budgets and national economies alike. Families that once spent significant portions of their income purchasing water from vendors or treating preventable diseases can redirect those resources toward education, better nutrition, or business investments. At the national level, improved water resources management brings more certainty and efficiency in productivity across economic sectors, making entire economies more resilient and competitive.

Sanitation’s profound impact on child and maternal health

While water access captures headlines, sanitation quietly works behind the scenes to save lives. The connection between sanitation and health outcomes, particularly for mothers and children, is both direct and dramatic.

Protecting the most vulnerable populations

Research reveals striking statistics about this relationship. Studies across 193 countries found that for every quartile increase in sanitation access, under-five mortality decreased by 1.66 deaths per 1,000 live births. That’s not just a number-it represents thousands of children who survive to celebrate their fifth birthdays, attend school, and contribute to their communities’ futures.

The pathways through which sanitation protects child health are multiple. Clean water is essential for mothers preparing formula for infants who aren’t breastfed. Proper handwashing facilities prevent the spread of infections. When human waste is safely managed rather than contaminating the environment, children playing outside face far fewer health risks. Even basic practices like hygienic cord cutting during childbirth can reduce infant infection rates dramatically.

Supporting maternal health and survival

For expectant and new mothers, access to water and sanitation can literally mean the difference between life and death. Women in households with poor sanitation face 3.07 times higher odds of maternal mortality compared to those with adequate facilities. The reasons are clear: exposure to contaminated water during pregnancy increases risks of malaria, typhoid, and other infections that can lead to miscarriage or maternal death.

Conditions like anemia and nutritional deficiencies, often worsened by water-related diseases, contribute to up to 20% of maternal deaths. Clean birthing environments with proper hygiene facilities dramatically reduce infection risks during delivery-one of the most critical periods for both mother and child. When health facilities lack basic water and sanitation services, even skilled medical care cannot fully protect against preventable complications.

The connection extends beyond the immediate postpartum period. When mothers survive and remain healthy, their children thrive. Studies show that children who lose their mothers are ten times more likely to die before their second birthday, making maternal health protection through water and sanitation access a child survival strategy as well.

Building a foundation for sustainable development

The 2015 deadline for the Millennium Development Goals has passed, and while progress was made-the world met the drinking water target in 2010, with 90% of the global population using improved water sources by 2012-the sanitation target remained unmet. This reality underscores both how far we’ve come and how much work remains.

What’s become increasingly clear is that water and sanitation aren’t luxury add-ons to development-they’re prerequisites. You cannot have productive workers without healthy populations. You cannot achieve gender equality when women spend hours daily fetching water. You cannot reduce child mortality without addressing the diseases that contaminated water spreads.

The transition to the Sustainable Development Goals for 2030 recognizes this reality with SDG 6 calling for universal access to safe water and sanitation. But beyond the targets and timelines, the fundamental truth remains: investing in water and sanitation is investing in human potential, economic opportunity, and the possibility of breaking cycles of poverty that have trapped generations.
