Imagine waking up in a world where turning on a tap doesn’t guarantee clean water, or where basic hygiene is a luxury rather than a given. For billions of people across the globe, this isn’t imagination-it’s daily reality. Water and sanitation are more than just infrastructure issues; they’re foundational pillars that hold up human dignity, public health, economic prosperity, and environmental sustainability. Understanding why these resources matter so deeply can reshape how we think about development itself.

What do we mean by water and sanitation?

When we talk about water and sanitation, we’re referring to interconnected systems that protect human health and well-being. Clean water means access to safe drinking water that’s free from contaminants-water you can drink without fear of illness. It’s not just about having water available; it’s about having water that won’t harm you.

Sanitation encompasses far more than toilets. It includes the entire chain of managing human waste-from collection and treatment to safe disposal or reuse. This means proper sewage systems, wastewater treatment facilities, and ensuring that waste doesn’t contaminate water sources or spread disease. When sanitation fails, communities face devastating health consequences.

Hygiene practices complete this trio. Handwashing with soap, menstrual hygiene management, and food safety protocols are all critical behaviors that prevent disease transmission. These three elements-water, sanitation, and hygiene-work together as what experts call WASH services, and they form the bedrock of public health infrastructure.

The global push for universal access

The world hasn’t always recognized water and sanitation as fundamental human rights. The International Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation Decade, spanning 1981 to 1990, marked a turning point in global commitment. During this decade, the United Nations rallied countries to prioritize bringing clean water and sanitation to their populations, with the ambitious goal of universal coverage by 1990.

While the decade didn’t achieve its ultimate goal, it brought water to over 1.2 billion people and sanitation to almost 770 million individuals-a remarkable achievement that demonstrated what coordinated international effort could accomplish. The initiative also highlighted persistent challenges: rapid urbanization, insufficient funding, and the need for appropriate technology and trained personnel.

Today, Sustainable Development Goal 6 carries forward this mission, aiming to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all by 2030. Yet the numbers remain sobering. In 2024, approximately 2.2 billion people still lacked safely managed drinking water, 3.4 billion lacked safely managed sanitation, and 1.7 billion lacked basic hygiene services at home. These aren’t just statistics-they represent real people facing daily struggles that affect every aspect of their lives.

How water and sanitation protect human health

The connection between water, sanitation, and health couldn’t be more direct. Waterborne diseases like cholera, typhoid, dysentery, and diarrheal infections thrive where clean water and proper sanitation are absent. These illnesses kill millions annually, with children under five bearing the heaviest burden.

Consider what happens when a community lacks proper sanitation. Human waste contaminates water sources, food, and living spaces. People-often women and girls-must walk long distances to find water, which may not even be safe to drink. Children miss school due to illness or because they’re needed to fetch water. Healthcare systems in developing countries become overwhelmed treating preventable waterborne diseases, diverting resources from other critical health needs.

The ripple effects extend beyond immediate illness. Chronic exposure to contaminated water can lead to long-term health problems, including stunted growth in children, weakened immune systems, and increased vulnerability to other diseases. When people are constantly sick, they can’t work consistently, children fall behind in education, and entire communities remain trapped in cycles of poor health and poverty.

Breaking the disease cycle

Providing clean water and sanitation infrastructure creates a powerful intervention point. Simple measures like handwashing with soap can reduce diarrheal diseases by nearly 50 percent. Proper sewage treatment prevents pathogens from entering water supplies. Clean water for drinking and cooking eliminates a major disease transmission route. Together, these interventions transform community health outcomes dramatically and rapidly.

The economic case for investment

Water and sanitation aren’t just health issues-they’re economic imperatives. When people spend hours each day collecting water or are frequently ill from waterborne diseases, productivity plummets. The World Bank estimates that individuals need between 2,000 and 5,000 liters of water per day when you account for food production and other essential activities, far beyond the 50 to 100 liters needed for personal use.

Businesses require reliable water supplies for manufacturing, processing, and operations. Agriculture-which employs billions globally-depends entirely on water availability. When water is scarce or contaminated, economic activity grinds to a halt. Conversely, investing in water and sanitation infrastructure creates jobs, enables agricultural productivity, supports industry, and allows people to focus on income-generating activities rather than survival tasks.

The economic returns on WASH investments are substantial. For every dollar spent on water and sanitation, studies show returns of four dollars or more through reduced healthcare costs, increased productivity, and saved time. This makes water and sanitation infrastructure one of the most cost-effective development investments available.

Social well-being and dignity

Beyond health and economics, water and sanitation profoundly affect human dignity and social equity. Women and girls disproportionately bear the burden of water collection, spending hours daily on this task instead of attending school or pursuing income opportunities. Lack of private, safe sanitation facilities particularly affects women and girls, who may face harassment, assault, or miss school during menstruation.

Access to proper sanitation facilities in schools keeps girls enrolled through adolescence. Workplaces with adequate facilities support women’s workforce participation. Public sanitation infrastructure enables people experiencing homelessness to maintain hygiene and dignity. These aren’t luxuries-they’re basic requirements for participating fully in society.

Communities with reliable water and sanitation infrastructure also experience improved social cohesion. When people aren’t competing for scarce water resources or dealing with open defecation in their neighborhoods, tensions decrease and community well-being improves. Public spaces become cleaner and more pleasant, enhancing quality of life for everyone.

Protecting our environmental foundation

Water resources and environmental health are inseparably linked. Approximately 1.9 billion people currently live in potentially severely water-scarce areas, and this number could reach 3 billion by 2050. Climate change is disrupting natural water cycles, making precipitation patterns less predictable and exacerbating both droughts and floods.

Meanwhile, pollution threatens freshwater ecosystems. Around 80 percent of global wastewater flows back into the environment without treatment, contaminating rivers, lakes, and groundwater. This pollution doesn’t just affect humans-it decimates aquatic ecosystems, threatens biodiversity, and disrupts the natural water cycle that all life depends on.

Sustainable water management protects these ecosystems while ensuring human needs are met. Proper wastewater treatment prevents pollution. Water-use efficiency reduces pressure on natural water sources. Protecting watersheds, wetlands, and forests maintains the natural infrastructure that filters water, prevents flooding, and supports biodiversity. When we manage water resources sustainably, we’re investing in environmental resilience that will benefit generations to come.

The path forward

Achieving universal access to water and sanitation requires unprecedented commitment and investment. Current progress suggests that without acceleration, the world won’t achieve sustainable water management until 2049-nearly two decades past the 2030 target. This demands increased funding, innovative technologies, better governance, and meaningful community participation in planning and management.

Success stories exist. Countries that have prioritized water and sanitation infrastructure have seen remarkable improvements in public health, economic productivity, and quality of life. The challenge is scaling these successes globally, particularly in underserved rural areas and rapidly growing urban centers where infrastructure struggles to keep pace with population growth.

The interconnected nature of water and sanitation with other development goals-from poverty reduction to gender equality to climate action-means that progress here creates positive ripples throughout society. Every household connected to safe water, every community with proper sanitation, represents not just infrastructure built but futures transformed.
